Science club

Today was the first day of our science coop.  It was fantastic.  Today's topic was slime and non-Newtonian forces.  Although properties of matter is a grade 2 PLO, it definitely went well and above this.  They definitely had lots of more advanced chemistry and physics.   We had 44 students in with the SFU teachers today and it worked quite well.  They listened to a 20-30 min lecture, then they made their slime. ( Elmer's glue and borax).  Next they had another 1/2 hr lecture on non Newtonian forces.  And back to hands on goopy cornstarch and water, for the non-Newtonian experiment.  All the children listened really well.
Doesn't Nathan look excited
look at these cuties!

That's a big group of well behaved kids!

Nathan loved this, he got to mix up the non-Newtonian fluid!  he loved the feeling.

lots of moms helping

After science 12:00 we had lunch there and we started chess club.  Nathan and Gigi started out playing a game together. I spent 5 minutes showing Gigi the moves and she was off.  Although she only played one game with Nathan.  Nathan spent the entire time playing chess and loved it.
they played so well together, I only stayed for a few minutes, and they were good to go.

aww look there's Simone!  Poor Simone is sick today...

  1. This looks like it's going to be an AWESOME addition to the kids' science program! Way to champion such a successful home-schooler's workshop!

  2. I so love the Chilliwack homeschooling community. I have noticed all of these parents organizing events and different activities for the kids to join in. I knew I wanted to do my part to organize something. It seems so many of the moms and dads, have taken on something and made it. One mom organizes a sports day each year, now that's a lot of work! Another mom, organized a cirque du solei trip every year, homeschool hockey, sto:lo trip and on and on. Since I love science, I suckered another mom, into helping organize this science club and chess club. It is three of us moms who have organized it, which is great and we have worked wonderfully together! We each do our part to help with the organizing. I just cant believe we got SFU to agree to come out every month to facilitate for us!!!

  3. That is a huge group! And some people think that homeschooled kids don't get enough social interaction . . . I am so pleased to hear that SFU is coming out to facilitate. Oh, and chemistry does get covered in gr.5, so you've already got several of Nathan's PLOs just doing those experiments.
