Alliteration, Nathan and Genevieve had to read 2 chapters and find examples of alliteration, and then write some alliteration at home. We have also noticed alliteration when we are speaking and what we have read the last few days.
Nathan also made a mouse puppet and Gigi a porcupine puppet. They acted out scenes from the book.
Friday.
Day started off with canada studies. We read some more in our novel julie and the wolves. Nathan and Genevieve designed title pages for our note booking on natives. While doing this they were looking at the different holmes the different native tribes had. They enjoyed looking through the books from Donna ward for inspiration. Nathan's drawing was much better today Rachel :). I will have to take a picture.
We then did more moving beyond the page. They did a synonym crossword, they had to look up synonyms of a word in the book. I thought this was a great exercise in reading for information. They had to read the page but were reading for a purpose of finding a word. Same kind of thing they did the other day liking for alliteration. I though Nathan may have difficulties with this task, as he only likes reading certain books. He complained but I left him to his work, and he was done fairly quickly. Genevieve was able to complete this task quickly as well.
Nathan and Gigi both practiced their piano.
And then I called it a day as we were off to see a live taping of a ytv show, some assembly required.
On the way there we listened to math wrap ups, and then skip counting CDs. We are still working at perfecting skip counting by 6 and starting to get 7's.
Here are some pics of the live taping! What an experience this was! They got to see what happens in the production of a sitcom.

Don't worry he's having a great time, just being goofy. I was trying to take a picture as if tweeted with a hashtag you could win a prize, unfortunately I could not figure out how to tweet! |
Hi Marcy,
ReplyDeleteGood to hear Nathan is adding a bit of detail to his drawings! I don't want to give him a hard time, as I know written output is a real challenge for him. But if he's going to do an assignment, it would be worth putting the effort in!
It can be really difficult to encourage kids to try different genres of books. Have you ever gone to the Bookman in Chilliwack? It's a great place to find books that are not in the library or in new bookstores. Fun to browse, and the staff really know their stuff...
That live taping looks like a wonderful learning experience for the kids. Good find!

Yes it would be nice if Nathan's effort was consistent! But there is improvement so that is what I am most pleased with. So far this year, we have had no problems completing 3 hours of school work everyday! This is a huge success for us! I have our schedule planed out better this year, so that has helped. We are home everday until 12:30 at least, so it gives us time in the morning to get our school work accomplished. They are actually looking forward to school most days.
ReplyDeleteNathan does enjoy different genres, but the content is more what he is picky with. He has read biographies, science books, fiction. But he likes visuals, so he has harder times reading if the whole page is small print. He can do it but he really does not enjoy it. I did test him, as I was concerned maybe there was more to his aversion, of books with small print. Although horrible histories is small print but it has comics in it, and it is broken up by visuals, and most important it has humour. He will read some biographies, usually only science biographies. And Science he will read without humour, but it is hard to find the right fit for him, he does not want to read a textbook, but books aimed at children his age, he finds that they are talking down to him, and he just reads the first bit and says, I already know that, or do they think I am stupid... So finding a book that he finds is enjoyable is difficult for so many reasons. Nothing with Nathan is ever simple :) But we have been doing a good job at finding books for him lately, and he is reading the horrible histories and sciences right now. And yes we love going to both nuggets and the bookman, Nathan likes sitting there reading and petting the cat...
The live taping was amazing! TLA should organize a fieldtrip! It is free and the studio provides a bus, if you have at least 40 people going...
