Tuesday February 25

Math- we worked on rounding to the nearest 10 and estimating.

         - mini lecture,  I used our new magnetic ten frames to reinforce the concept, this definitely helped.

         - math u see worksheet

GAME- I got Genevieve and Nathan to use flash cards, they first had to solve the equation and then with the answer round to the nearest 10, I then had them put the card in piles of 0, 10, or 20 whichever the sum rounded too.

Word problem - they did a word problem sheet from math u see

Next we read chapter 2 of tornado

These were the skills learned in today's lesson

1 st up was the journal entry for the chapter summary.  Genevieve worked on  hers completely on her own.  Genevieve did do a beautiful illustration as well when she went to bed.

I scribed for Nathan, he worked on descriptive words in his writting today, even though I hadn't told him that was one of the goals today :).   Nathan thought it was pretty funny when he had to correct my spelling :)

We jotted down our key points first.

Next we used those points to expand on.

Next L A assignment was read a paragraph from the book and look at how descriptive the writting is, we read another paragraph that got the same idea across but was not as descriptive.  They then had to write a paragraph using their own descriptive words.  I let Nathan do this assignment completely on his own.

This was Genevieve's.

This was Nathan's, his is a little hard to read because if his difficulty printing.

Next up was Canadian arctic.  We read about prehistoric arctic, we learned about the ice ages.  We could draw on our experiences we had this summer.  We had gone hiking on a glacier :)

Also driving through saskatewan we noticed boulders in random spots, we discussed that the glaciers had moved these ricks there.

We remembered seeing how glaciers carved the rocks when we went hiking too.

Monday

Yesterday Nathan and daddy played with the snap circuits, it was great Nathan was able to describe to me exactly what they did, and when one experiment did not go as planned, Nathan was able to explain to me why.  Something about the motor causing interference.

It's always hard when daddy leaves for work...

We dropped Jeff off at the airport this morning, we went out for breakfast at our traditional abc, we always go there after we drop off Jeff.  The kids played with wiki sticks, making shapes, that's got to be school somehow!  They played the strategy game.

We talked about the weather...

We are studying weather :)

We talked about the term high ceiling and what that meant, discussed the size of the flakes.  It was windy and we talked about what causes the wind.

I had intended on doing schoolwork when we got home... It didn't happen, the kids played outside for 3 hrs and now it's dinner time, unless we get some energy tonight, we didn't do much...

There's always tomorow...

Friday February 21

Tla in the morning, we were on time today!  Nathan was excited as they were performing a play.

Ot - Nathan

Fsa tests for Nathan- these were slightly painful!   I watched Nathan write the first one and then left and did something else.  From what I could see he got all of his answers correct.  Not sure if his scores took a nosedive as time went on...

Thankfully he really liked one of the stories, he asked me to write down the authors name!   But he definitely found the tests too long, it was too long sitting at the computer.

This is a picture of Nathan crying and really not comfortable taking the fsa.  We made it through though, thankfully the next story was one he really liked.

Next Nathan and Genevieve had a play date with neighbours.  They all put on a play for us, it was great, I did record it if anyone needs a record of a drama production :)

Tuesday Wednesday Thursday

Tuesday - meeting with Nathan's teacher
              - piano lessons

Wednesday - physiotherapy
                    - hockey 2 hrs

Some art work of Genevieve's from Wednesday

Thursday

- Morning learning hockey rules by watching woman's gold medal winning game

Math. - learned about inequalities

Genevieve

Nathan

They played a game of memory subtraction equations

We then did a math word problem sheet involving inequalities

Language arts- focus today was main idea/ summary

Nathan continued reading his ancient Egypt book, still complained when forced to read, but was excited to tell me his summary.

Genevieve picked a book and read it and summarized it.

- next we did a worksheet from mbtp tornado unit.

Next up we started a chapter summary journal for tornado

Nathan's scribed by me

Genevieve's.  I asked for 3 sentences she did a few too many but did a very good summary.

Genevieve completed another page in her just write book.

She used the dictionary to look up how to spell the word train

And unfortunately we ran out of time, Gigi has cheer we had to leave the house at 4 and Nathan has a physiotherapist appointment with a new physio who specializes in orthopaedics.

Monday feb 17

Today we read chapter 1 of tornado, and we did the corresponding science unit on weather.

This was one activity of placing these vocab words in alphabetical order.  If they did not know the definitions they were supposed to look up in a dictionary, but they both knew the definitions.

Here they matched the words with the definitions.

Genevieve and I played linkology

Both Nathan and Genevieve practiced the piano with yoka.

For math, we lost a little patience so instead of pushing my luck we played a place value game from learning resources.

Tuesday February 11

Wow am I tired!

Field trip to vancouvers china town.  We went on a guided tour of china town.  It ended with an authentic Chinese lunch.  I would like to take the kids back to china town and explore the shops and garden.

We then went to science world.  That's always fun.  We watched the IMAX butterfly movie.  They had a Lego exhibit and we played with keva planks :)

Sunday feb 16

Yeah I started all about spelling with Genevieve!   I'm not sure why but this program intimidated me!  It seemed so teacher intensive and the first lesson so boring.  But we did it, I think it should be ok, we just have to dedicate a little time each day to this, I would really like to help her in her writting.

Next Genevieve wanted to work on her just write book, I realize that I should have started on book1, she likes this book, but it is more than she knows.  Today she worked on subject and predicates.  I'm not even sure why we need to know these things, but I'm not a great writer, I'm sure it makes sence for learning a foreign language.  In writing though, I think the knowledge of having both a subject and predicate in your sentence is reached by osmosis from speaking.  Not sure why you actually have to know the official names.  I think the big word predicate scares her, it scares me lol.

Next we all covered day 2 of lesson 1 in our literature unit tornado.  We discussed life on a farm, and how different are lives would be.  We discussed how hard working a farm is.  We also talked about farming in ancient Egypt, since we are studying that in story of the world.  Nathan is reading a book that talked about the hardships of being a farmer in ancient Egypt.

We talked about setting and what it means and what the setting for the book tornado is about.

Genevieve's work in just write.

We had some friends over, I had to think of some things to occupy three high energy boys.

We played a few games

We built a satelight dish with kinex.  They played with the mag blocks building different things.  And had a tower building competition with keva planks.

Friday February 14

Nathan had a rough nite last night waking up with a massive headache.  We were up from 1-3.  I decided to let him sleep in this morning instead of going to tla class.   I waited until around 11 to start school work today.  We finished up our lesson 1 from yesterday on science.  We then continued on to lesson 2 in science.  We learned about what causes weather, how it all relates to the earth. How the heating of the water by the sun creates water vapour, how the heated air rising up and cooler air filling it's place causes wind.  We learned about the different layers of our atmosphere, we demonstrated with an apple that the peel of the apple is thicker than out atmosphere.  We used our Latin knowledge when discussing the layers of the atmosphere, to decipher what they meant.  Science took us about 1.5 hrs today.  Once we get going it's hard to stop, it's amazing how interconnected everything is.  I did want to start lesson 2 on tornado today, but we didn't.  I looked it over and it looks like it may be a shorter lesson.  Perhaps we will do it tomorow.

Nathan had a pretty bad headache on and off today.  We did manage to get to ot today in Abby, I was tempted to call in but thought it would be good to do some things today.  We skipped Genevieve's tumble time at twisters today though.

I am liking how the kids are learning and learning to love to learn again!

One thing I really like about the moving beyond the page curriculum is that it asks engaging questions. The questions you ask are not exactly rote memorization of what you have read ( well some are).  But I'm finding a lot of questions you have to really understand what you have learned to give an answer.  One question today Genevieve said well you never talked about that or gave us the answer.  Nathan quickly piped up and said well yes she did, you just have to take this and that and get your answer from it.

Genevieve's learning style is definitely the perfect student, she would ace every test in school :).  Nathan on the other hand would be bored out of his mind I think not being able to know it all in depth.  The kids are both loving school right now so I hope it can stay this way.  Genevieve is asking me all the time to do school work, and Nathan is getting engaged!

Thursday February 13

Yesterday was the usual.  Physio for Nate, music for Gigi.  Nathan was not feeling great, his body worn out from yesterday so he didn't play hockey, we sat and watched Genevieve play.  Nathan made the choice to not play, it was difficult for him, when I asked him to get ready he was crying, could not get ready, he didn't know why he was feeling the way he was.  But he was able to figure it out and say he was too tired to play, and that was the problem.

Thursday- we had two homeschooling friends stay the night with us, we took them home after hockey.

We got to start are moving beyond the page study today after I ran to the library to pick up the books.

Tornado- intro.  We discussed alternate titles for the book, each of the kids came up with a different title by looking at the picture.  I talked about what the book was going to be about.  The kids then drew a picture of a tornado, as I talked to them about the science of how a tornado forms.  They than added a few sentences  about tornados to there picture.

Nathan's sentences

Nathan's tornado drawing including people flying in the tornado
Genevieve's tornado
Gigi's writting, oops my phone turned it upside down

We discussed where tornado alley is and coloured a map, we also found it on the globe.

After they were done they did a puzzle of canada together. Nathan said ahh I'm naked.

Next up we went to the board and discussed all the weather words we knew.  I tied in a little if our arctic study by discussing how the Inuit have many words for snow in their language, we discussed it was because they have done all the time but it was because of survival needs as well.
We next did a weather vocabulary sheet
Nathan, drew lines smart boy!
Genevieve's vocab work

I also got Nathan and Genevieve to read a book to their friends...
