1st hockey tournament

Hockey

Nathan had a hockey tournament in Hope this weekend and what a great experience it was.  It was perfect that my parents live in hope so we could stay at their house and have some quiet time to rest between games.  The first game was against Hope and was very rough.  Nathan scored the first goal of the game!!! Yeah nathan.  He got checked his legs taken out from him and the other player smashed him into the boards from behind.  A penalty was called, but I was a little concerned to see that play.  I was already half closing my eyes as I was saying oh man this game is really chippy!  Nathan didn't miss a shift but I could tell he was not 100percent.  When he got home the verdict was a sore and swollen ankle from being smashed into the boards.   Voltaren and hot baths came to the rescue.  He managed to play every game!  They won all 5 games and advanced to the final 2 teams. Unfortunately our goal tender broke his glasses right before the game!  They ended up loosing the game 7-0.  It was some pretty great hockey to watch especially the 1/4 final game.  Very quick hockey.   Nathan had to definitely push himself to keep up.

Now it's Monday and the aftermath.  He went to bed at 7 pm Sunday night.  He has a migraine today. He payed on the coach in the basement in the dark for a few hours.  He's starting to feel better now at 2 pm.  We are now trying to encourage him to complete some of his schoolwork now.

Genevieve has started her tuck everlasting.  Her first assignment is to make a vocabulary book.  She is supposed to draw a picture for each vocabulary.  Any guesses how long this will take?  I had decided to let nathan and Genevieve do seperate novel studies at some points this year so that they can work more independently and I think it will help Genevieve decide what she wants to spend more time on.  I am letting her work through at her own pace and if she wants to spend 2 hours at making her dictionary that's ok.  I am sure nathan will have more sick days and Gigi can just take more time on her assignments which she enjoys having the time to go deeper with them.

And guess what is happening right now?  Nathan is cuddled up with me on the couch as I type this and he is reading the hobbit on his Kobo!  He is getting used to the functions of his kobo.  He is excited that he can look up words right away!  He always asks me when he is reading for definitions so this is going to work great.  He just looked up the word porthole.  Yes he knew it a little but he really likes fully understanding.  He doesn't like that you can't flip back and look at the maps as easy if it was a real book.  But I think he will get used to this, we found out how to find them easy on the table of contents.  He is finding the print easier to read then in a printed book.  Yeah!  I was thinking it would be easier as I find it easier to read on a kobo.

  1. I had to smile when you mentioned your son is reading the Hobbit. Our children love the series!

    Blessings~

    1. So far so good my son seems to be enjoying it. I wasn't sure as he isn't usually a fantasy fan while reading.

  2. It's so hard to watch them being hurt in sports. I think it is harder on the mom than it is on the child! They want to be out on the ice so bad they don't notice the pain as much.
The dictionary function on e-readers is so helpful, I use mine all the time. I'm happy to hear that he is adjusting to using the Kobo. What are his first impressions of the Hobbit?
I'm sure Genevieve's vocabulary book will end up looking beautiful ;)

    1. Nathan is enjoying the hobbit! He only read 1/2 of the first chapter yesterday as that's all he could do, but he was really enjoying it. He happily picked up the book this morning and I haven't heard a peep for about an hour.

And genevieves vocabulary book is looking good. She finished her assignments this morning and started on lesson 2, she was excited to start reading her book today

  3. Wow, the first goal! Way to go, Nathan!

It sounds like he was quite a trooper, despite the incidents! Did he cope well in those situations? Did he ask for the Voltaren or an ice pack?

I hope he has completely recovered today and had a great day.

    Thanks for sharing, Marcy.
